Maybell and Nature Spirits in Winter

If you haven't read or perhaps have forgotten much of Nature Spirits are Vegetarians let me catch you up on Nature Spirits. Bryan MacPherson and his Wife Effie told me a lot about the physical structure of what we commonly call Fairies. They are not immortal myths, they just have very long life spans. They are warm blooded mammals. They do not have wings like butterflies, but rather more like bats.

Maybell hasn't been around much lately nor have the other fairies. A week or so ago it was really warm and I ran into Maybell stretching and slowly sauntering around behind our house. I of course asked her where she had been, where everyone had been.

"Sleeping."
"Sleeping?" I said.

"Yes, we all sleep a lot during the cold months and when the days are short. Some of the time days or weeks at a time."

"You mean you hibernate?"

She looked quizzical and said: "I suppose so. There's nothing much to do and it's a cozy thing to do, so we all get together and cuddle up together and sleep a lot."

Trying to remember my manners, but "Are you part bat?" just tumbled out of my mouth.

"Are you a gorilla?"

"No, but humans are related to gorillas"

"And the Fairies are related to bats."

"That makes so much sense. I wondered why when my mother got real old, she couldn't hear the Fairies. I remember now, that she stopped hearing bats as well. A lot of humans can't hear bats."

What about the gnomes, trolls and leprechauns?  What is their evolutionary heritage"

"I can't chat any more, it's a nice day and I'm hungry for some of those Juniper Berries down the path and maybe fly up and fight the crows for red seeds off the Sumac trees. Just remember that evolution was not just designed for the benefit of humans."

She unfolded her large luminescent wings and for the first time I took notice that there were something like crescent bracelets that she clipped onto her ankles and wrists before she took flight. I suppose the other fairies did the same thing, but I just never noticed. She flew down the path and out of sight. Our visit was over.
